This month more than 98 percent of students attended the celebration, which included information on a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, the Puppy Jake Foundation, which provides military veterans with service dogs. Every month we celebrate students who are demonstrating that they are respectful, responsible, motivated learners who have zero or one office referral. The school is in the second year of implementation with positive behavior intervention support (PBIS). ![]() We glued our pictures on a large sheet of paper and colored in the grass. ![]() We included our outdoor classroom, the track, the upper and lower playgrounds, the soccer field, the parking lot, the school garden, the flag pole and other features. We walked around to see what is on our campus, made a list of what we wanted to include and divided into teams to draw our school and those items. Students made their own map of the school and surrounding grounds. In social science, first-graders are supposed to use a map to identify the location of the school, neighborhood, city, state and country. Many volunteers and students from the Children and Family Urban Movement after-school program harvested and packaged the produce. Produce from the school garden was sent home to give fresh items to families using the Back Pack Buddies program. Volunteers helped the kids to prepare Meals from the Heartland, make cards for kids at the Blank Hospital, repaint the world map on the playground and pick up trash on the school grounds. Krist will lead hands-on activities about nutrition and healthy living.įourth-graders, along with their business partners at EY, held their annual Make a Difference Day Sept. Students will be cooking every week during our Eco Hour with our new FoodCorps member Chelsea Krist. Success program worker Nevenka Francic helped with the food processor as students made an eggplant dip, which was enjoyed with crackers and carrot slices from our garden. In reading they have been focusing on characters and predicting what the story would be like without them.įourth-graders prepared fresh eggplant from our Hillis Community Garden. They hope to have some visitors from a variety of communities. In social studies they are studying what makes a community, locally and around the world. The third-graders are working on addition and rounding and math activities that include body movements and chants/songs. Third-grade students are learning how to determine character traits in reading, and the students are working to compare and contrast two characters within a story and across different stories. They choose from props provided to help with their presentation. ![]() They choose one piece from the week’s writing lessons and read it to the class. They then assembled a cardboard piggy bank for the students to take home along with the book.įirst-graders show off their writing skills when they sit in the author’s chair. Third-graders met with the “Read Learn Succeed” program volunteers, who worked one on one or with two students, reading “The Penny Pot” and helping the students visualize the amount of coins being counted in the book. 16 Edmunds was the recipient of the United Way of Iowa’s Day of Action.
